In our eyes, the Great Barrier Reef is a synecdoche (a symbol where a part of something represents the whole) for the planet itself, and a symbol for the way that human behavior is destroying our planet's beauty and complexity. Roughly 50% of the reef has been wiped out in the past few decades, with research suggesting it could vanish completely within the century. Poor water quality from land-based runoff, impacts of coastal development, and illegal fishing and bycatch are the main contributors to the detriment of our Planet’s largest living structure. With each purchase of the Great Barrier Reef Tee, proceeds are donated directly to charities and organizations working to protect, preserve, and restore this vital ecosystem, as well as support the indigenous people who rely upon the reef to sustain their families.
